Safe and Sound Protocol
What is Safe and Sound Protocol?
Polyvagal-Informed Listening Therapy for Trauma, Anxiety, and Sensory Sensitivities
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a gentle, evidence-based listening therapy designed to support nervous system regulation, improve auditory processing, and increase social connection and emotional resilience. Rooted in Polyvagal Theory, this non-invasive intervention uses specially filtered music to help the brain and body feel safer, calmer, and more connected.
SSP works by stimulating the vagus nerve through sound, encouraging the nervous system to shift out of survival mode and into a state that supports healing, safety, and social engagement. In essence, it’s a way of “retuning” the nervous system to better manage stress, reduce reactivity, and support emotional well-being
How SSP Works
You will listen to specially filtered music through headphones, either remotely or in person with the support of a trained provider.
The protocol is delivered in carefully paced sessions designed to create a safe, regulated experience.
It can be integrated into ongoing therapy or used as a stand-alone nervous system support tool.
Who Can Benefit from the Safe and Sound Protocol?
SSP is appropriate for children, teens, and adults and has shown positive results for individuals experiencing:
Trauma and PTSD
Anxiety and chronic stress
Sound sensitivities or auditory processing challenges
Autism spectrum traits or sensory processing differences
Emotional dysregulation or behavioral difficulties
Social withdrawal or difficulty connecting with others
Why Choose SSP?
If you struggle with feeling constantly on edge, disconnected, or overwhelmed by sound or stimulation, SSP may offer a path to greater calm, clarity, and connection.
As part of a polyvagal-informed therapy approach, SSP complements other modalities by preparing the nervous system for deeper emotional work.
Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) Fees
The Safe and Sound Protocol is a unique offering that involves both in-session work and between-session support. To access the SSP program, there is a initial fee of $300, which includes:
Six months of access to the SSP music listening platform
Monitoring and support between sessions to ensure a safe and effective experience
Coordination and pacing of the protocol based on your individual needs and nervous system responses
This fee covers the infrastructure and support necessary to deliver the SSP outside of session time and is not billable to insurance. Ongoing access to SSP after the first six months is billed at $200 for each six month period at a time.
If we’re incorporating SSP into your ongoing therapy, our work together during regular sessions, those sessions will continue to be billed at your standard session rate and may be eligible for insurance reimbursement.
